George Pullman charged his architects – Solon Beman and Nathan Barrett – to design a company town that was exquisitely beautiful. He did so, in part, to attract and retain the most skilled artists and craftsmen to build his luxurious rail cars.
The beauty of Pullman continues to attract artists and other creatives. PullmanArts – in partnership with Artspace, Inc. and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives – hopes to attract even more artists to call Pullman home. Together, our three groups are in the pre-development phase of converting historic structures into artist live/work spaces.
If We Build It, They Will Come
Our joint effort grows out of two market surveys we conducted over the past couple of years. They reveal that many artists are strongly interested in relocating to Pullman. Based on this, we are planning a space that would include about 40 rental units, ranging from studios to two bedrooms. The live/work space will also include a communal “flex space” that could be used for exhibitions, classes, meetings and other community events.
We have recently finalized site selection and are beginning the design process. If you would like to make a contribution to help advance our efforts, please click on the “make a donation” button below.
